Is Covering Up a Feminist Issue?

One of the issues for breastfeeding mothers is about covering up in public. When I was nursing my children, I did not use any kind of blanket or cover up, i just lifted my shirt as much as I needed to latch them on.

It was important to me that other people see me nursing in public.

Until I had my children, I had never seen anyone breastfeed. Ever.

I want to support women nursing however they feel comfortable. Whether in malls, subways or movie theatres. In nursing rooms, or park benches. Using covers, blankets or nothing at all.

Today, I am sharing with you a video about the topic by one of my favourite people online PhD in Parenting

The video is called Covering up is a Feminist Issue and it is an amazing collection of images of women from all over the world. The topic is near and dear to me, and I hope you will watch and share your ideas and reactions below.

The video is based on a blog post that i came across a few months ago (although it was written in Jan 2010) on the PhD in Parenting blog called Covering up is a Feminist Issue

The post is brilliant and I really encourage you to read it and get to know the site, it is such an amazing resource for parents and parents to be.

I ask you to watch it and let me know what you think.   Is covering up a feminist issue? I think it is.

My son is 25. It's so sad to think this is still an issue. We were fighting for the right to breast feed anytime anywhere way back then and I would have hoped we would have won. For life of me I will never understand why this is even an issue.

Thank you so much for reading and for your comment.

I think it is an ongoing issue for women. Videos and blogs like Annie's are critical in continuing to move things forward

It is so ridiculous, if my nipple is covered by a bit of lycra it is considered a bikini top but if my nipple is covered by a nursing baby it is obscene. I hope that one day nursing a baby will be seen what it is, a natural thing that needs to be done to feed a baby not as a sexualized act. I hope that this generation of breastfeeding mamas opens the door for the next & our daughters and the mothers of our grandchildren will be able to nurse in public without ever being made to feel that they are doing something wrong.

This is the best video I have seen about feeding in public. It makes the point soooooo well. It would be great if it could get some mainstream air time!!! Really REALLY well done!!!!
